From Fethard, County Tipperary, Ben Coen is a nephew of and began his career as an apprentice with trainer Andy Slattery. He rode 40 winners on the pony racing circuit and rode his first winner on the racecourse when landing the Ash Brothers Building Contractors Handicap (Division 2) on Timia for trainer Keith Clarke at Dundalk on November 17, 2017. 

Ben proved to be one of the finds of the season the following year and rode by far his biggest early winner when taking the Irish Stallion Farms EBF "Northfields" Handicap on the Peter Fahey-trained Hamley on the second day of the Longines Irish Champions Weekend at the Curragh in September, 2018.

He rode his first Group race winner when partnering the Johnny Murtagh-trained Know It All to win the Group 3 Derrinstown Stud Fillies Stakes at Leopardstown in July, 2020. Ben was just 19 years of age when appointed stable jockey by Murtagh in January of the following year. 

Create Belief gave both Ben and trainer Johnny Murtagh a first Royal Ascot success in the Sandringham Handicap for three-year-old fillies in June 2021. In his riding days, Murtagh notched up 43 winners at the meeting. Ottoman Emperor won the Group 3 Gordon Stakes at Goodwood the following month. 

Ben was still 19 years of age when gaining his first Classic success on the Johnny Murtagh-trained Sonnyboyliston in the Comer Group International Irish St Leger at the Curragh in September 2021.
