Sligo ready for Ladies Day excitement

There will be a great atmosphere at Sligo for Ladies Day

The biggest day in the Sligo racing calendar is just around the corner with Ladies Day on Thursday.

Racing fans can expect a great day of National Hunt racing with a bumper crowd descending on the track.

The west coast track's most prestigious day of racing features seven races in all, with the feature race at 7:35pm in the Lighthouse at Clifford Electrical Handicap Hurdle.

There are €5000 worth of prizes to be won, including a €1000 cash prize, a €500 voucher from iconic Irish designer Caroline Kilkenny, and an overnight stay for two in the beautiful Harvey's Point Lakeside Hotel and Spa.

The rewards continue, with a €150 voucher from EC Aesthetics, a gift bag including a voucher valued at €300 from Westend Beauty and Aesthetics Clinic, and a €50 voucher from Canella Lane.

Kathryn Foley, Manager at Sligo Races, is thrilled to be hosting the time-honoured tradition for yet another year.

"I really can't say exactly how long we've been running ladies' day, but I'd say for the last 30 years," Foley said "We've run it every year I've been here for the last 11 years at Sligo Races ,and Ladies Day was always a great day long before I came here.

"We put a lot of effort into making it very interesting for the ladies that show up and are dressed, we try to leave nobody out.

"We select 10 finalists, but anyone who catches the eye of the judges will be invited to have a glass of prosecco in the marquee. So, we create a pleasant atmosphere. I think the ladies who come here appreciate that they feel included.

"We have a very nice prize that has been supported by the family of a lady who was a finalist here in Sligo. Unfortunately, Regina Dodd passed away last year, and her sister has kindly donated a lovely prize for the best hat and accessories. So we have cash prize going to the winner of the best hat and best accessories."

Away from the Ladies day festivities, there is a bumper day of racing, which, like the awards, are supported mainly by local businesses.

The 7:35 feature race sees runners from some of the best trainers from across the country, including Gordon Elliot's Boston Rajj and John Patrick Ryan's Grange Walk.

A crowd of over 4,000 is expected on the day, bringing a magical atmosphere to such a special day in the racing calendar.
