Lossiemouth shines with ninth G1 win at Leopardstown

Paul Townend on Lossiemouth after their victory

Willie Mullins believes that Lossiemouth is on her way to 'legend' status after clinching an incredible ninth Grade 1 win at Leopardstown Christmas Festival.

The mare saw off Brighterdaysahead in the December Hurdle to clinch the win alongside Paul Townend to bring her tally to nine. It marked the fourth G1 of 2025 for the horse, who is still only six years old, holding the competition at bay in a thrilling finish.

With so much success to her name, Mullins has backed the mare as one of the best he has ever trained and is already writing her name in his own Hall of Fame.

"She's a good mare, she did her job well," he said. "It was a funny sort of a race with Anzadam running away halfway through the race, it left Paul with a little bit of a quandary but he relied on her staying power and stamina. I'm very happy.

"[Lossiemouth] is right up there. Nine grade ones is quite extraordinary, I never dreamt that she would win that many. "She's only six so there are a lot of races for her still to compete in and win more. She is becoming a bit of a legend in her own right."

Brighterdaysahead provided a late challenge in Leopardstown as Patrick Mullins was unable to get Anzadam into fifth gear when it mattered.

It allowed Townend and Lossiemouth to do what they do best and soar ahead to clinch the win.

"I didn't know what to think [during the race]," added Mullins. "I wondered if she would be beaten but Paul said to me after the race that she was just idling in front and there was plenty in the tank."

Gordon Elliott enjoyed a dream end to Leopardstown as he saw his 18th winner since Christmas.

In a month to remember for the trainer, his success only continued, with a remarkable victory for Wodhooh in the G3 Kerrymount Mares Hurdle the highlight of the day. There was no stopping Wodhooh and Jack Kennedy, with Elliott teasing her involvement in the Mares Hurdle next year after such a strong showing.

"18 wins is a massive number, we got 11 five years ago and to get to that is unbelievable," said Elliott. "We'll keep smiling."

Elliott also saw wins from Lynches Knock in the Irish Stallion Farms Academy Hurdle and Kish Bank in the Opportunity Handicap Chase earlier in the day, before Keep Him Company closed out proceedings.

Ridden by Josh Williamson, the gelding won the Jump Into Hospitality At Dublin Racing Festival INH Flat Race to ensure that Elliott ended the festival on fine form.

It means that the trainer won 13 out of 27 races he had runners in at the Festival, including 45% of all races at the track.

Champagne Kid was victorious in the Premier Handicap Hurdle for Eoghan Finegan and Pat Collins, while Frankie John took the win in the Donohue Marquees Maiden Hurdle for Denis Gerard Hogan.

Henry De Bromhead's Walks In June took the win in the SIS Supporting Irish Racing Novice Handicap Hurdle.
