Field Of Gold storms to dominant Guineas victory

Field Of Gold streaks clear under Colin Keane in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas

Colin Keane hailed a ‘straightforward’ Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas victory as Field Of Gold stormed to a brilliant victory at the Curragh.

The evens favourite justified the price with an eye-catching display, making light of a wide draw in stall nine to streak clear as Keane timed his charge to perfection.

It marked a second win in the race for the jockey, who also steered Siskin home in 2020 in a tighter encounter, and Keane was delighted to land the honours in the first Classic of the Irish summer.

“It was a lot more straightforward and a lot more enjoyable,” he told Racing TV.

“Kieran (Shoemark) told me everything I needed to know about him this morning and put me in the right direction.

“When he left the stalls, he relaxed instantly and from then on I was very happy. If he keeps relaxing, there’s no reason he can’t go further.

“When I asked him, there was a bit more in him and he put them to bed very quickly.”

Field Of Gold was second in the British equivalent at Newmarket earlier this month but left no doubt as to his class on this occasion.

The three-year-old headed a Juddmonte one-two, with Cosmic Year second under Oisin Murphy, with Hotazhell third for Shane Foley and Jessica Harrington.

Field Of Gold’s trainer John Gosden believes a step up in trip is possible for the victor – but not until after Royal Ascot.

“The owner is very keen to go up to a mile and a quarter but I think we will hang on for a little bit and do one more race at a mile, so all being well the St James’s Palace Stakes is the plan,” he said.

“He showed a lot of class here, the form is incredibly solid.

“Being drawn on the wing is often a little tricky, you can get out of it a little keen. But Colin said cantering down he was relaxed so I said I have no instructions, ride it as you find it.

“I wouldn’t see any reason to change (the jockey) but that’s not my decision. I’ll talk to Barry, who manages the racing side for Juddmonte, and take it from there.”

There was a surprise in the Group 2 Weatherbys Ireland Greenland Stakes as 22/1 shot James’s Delight claimed the spoils for trainer Clive Cox, with Murphy on board.

A tight race was decided by a photo finish, with Lethal Levi edged out by a shoulder and 33/1 outsider Big Gossey narrowly behind in third. Aidan O’Brien’s 6/4 favourite Storm Boy finished seventh.
