Ballinrobe ready for action-packed summer

Ballinrobe Racecourse is all set for an action-packed summer

The roar of the crowd at any racecourse is enough to raise goosebumps but at Ballinrobe it is particularly special.

The Co Mayo track is known for its atmosphere, attracting spectators from across the country while remaining grounded in community, and there will be plenty of chances to experience it this summer.

As Ballinrobe hosts McHale Raceday in May and their Ladies Day in June, it is set to be another scintillating season of racing with spectators hoping to catch a glimpse of future stars.

“We're always known for a welcome atmosphere and the roar of the crowd,” said Claire Kerr, the track’s marketing executive.

“Johnny Ward says that he hasn't heard a roar of the crowd like he does at Ballinrobe, because we are a small venue, but it creates a really exciting atmosphere.

“It is also very family orientated as well. A lot of families will come. We have a playground here with loads of space so people can know that their children are safe to run around and have a good time.

“We cater for children and families, as well as those who want more of a social occasion with friends or co-workers.

“The pride is seeing the racecourse develop over the years, because before we even got involved, there was risk of the racecourse closing down.

“Now to see it as such a vibrant venue that a lot of people talk about, have a lot of respect for and know they are coming to good facilities. That brings a great sense of pride.”

Dual Grand National winner Tiger Roll and 2017 Punchestown Champion Hurdle winner Wicklow Brave are among those to have excelled at the track in the past.

In fact, Tiger Roll won his first race over chases on the track at Ballinrobe and the McHale Raceday, which took place on May 26, now has a race named after him.

Further fixtures follow on June 23, July 21 & 22, August 11, August 25 and September 12 as the summer feelgood factor continues.

At all races, live music continues long into the evening in Ballinrobe’s pavilion to keep the famous atmosphere alive.

And the racecourse knows how to cater for a social occasion, as demonstrated by their Ladies Day which will take place on June 23.

“It's always a great social occasion. We get ladies from all over the country who attend that day,” said Kerr.

“It’s flat racing, so it's completely different, but it's more of a social occasion. Everyone has a really good time.”

The course retains a strong connection to the community whether through partnerships on racedays or events throughout the year.

Both lead sponsors - McHale and The Lodge at Ashford Castle - for their headline racing come from the local area but Ballinrobe’s reach extends much further.

“For all of our races for the last couple of years, we’ve had sponsors for every single race. A lot of that is our local businesses and our local community,” Kerr added.

“During the summer, there's a local festival hosted by the racecourse throughout the week in conjunction with racing. So there's always something going on with the local community.”

As part of their commitment to giving back, Ballinrobe sponsors their local GAA senior team, hosts the local rugby club—who use the centre of the track as a second pitch—facilitates cross country races for the Mayo schools region, and provides a venue for both the local Feis and the Western Lakes Cycling Club.

“There is a symbiotic relationship between the local community and the racecourse,” Kerr said. “We make our facilities available to local clubs, and in return, we’ve received tremendous support from local businesses and the wider community on racedays.”
