Oisin Murphy has one hand on the British jockeys' title ahead of the showpiece season finale at Ascot, writes James Toney.

Murphy started the penultimate day of season at Haydock Park just two wins ahead of nearest rival William Buick.

Buick narrowed that margin to 151-150 with an early victory before Murphy restored his advantage with a win on hot favourite Magisterial and inched further clear as Whitehaven cruised home in the final race of the day.

And while it will take a big shock to change things, the season will still be decided at Qipco British Champions Day, where Buick rides Derby and King George winner Adayar in the the Champions Stakes, Britain's richest race.

He has five rides in total at Ascot, one more than Murphy, who is seeking to win the title for the third straight season.

He will like the chances of sprinter Dragon Symbol while Alcohol Free, a two-time Group 1 winner this season, will go head-to-head to Frankie Dettori's Palace Pier in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

"It's been a good day and I've done the best I could with the rides I've had, it's not over yet though," said Murphy, who leads 153-150.

"I've been really feeling the pressure in the last few days but I've tried to think what will be, will be and just tried to take every opportunity.

"I've got some stars to ride tomorrow, the conditions will really suit them and they are all in very good spirits. Dragon Symbol is a superstar and he's one of the best sprinters around and he'll love the slower ground."
