There is a familiar name at the top of the early leading
trainer standings for the National Hunt season, with Willie Mullins currently
leading the way,writes Paul Martin.
The King of Closutton has been champion trainer every
year since the 2008/09 season and has made an excellent start to repeating the feat,
with 64 winners and total prize money exceeding €1m so far.
Recent successes have included two-time Cesarewitch
winner Stratum, who Jack Foley steered to victory at Thurles, and doubles at
both Sligo and Tramore.
Mullins will now hope to land his first Irish Grade 1 of
the campaign at Punchestown on Sunday, with Echoes in Rain and 2018 winner
Sharjah entered into the Morgiana Hurdle – a race the veteran trainer won every
year between 2011 and 2019.
Henry de Bromhead, for whom Rachael Blackmore triumphed
aboard Notebook at Navan last weekend, sits second, with Gordon Elliott in third.
Joseph O’Brien and Denise Foster make up the remainder of
the fledgling top five, with John Ryan, Gavin Cromwell and Emmet Mullins also
enjoying steady starts to the campaign.
