Mullins is expected to rake in the Cheltenham winners but Elliott is planning to stop him

It’s not always all about Willie Mullins, as Gordon Elliott has enjoyed a recent resurgence in the race to be crowned Champion Trainer, writes Bradley West.

The Meath trainer has bagged seven winners over the last week and ten over the last fortnight as he bids to play catch up to the Master of Closutton.

With Mullins having enjoyed a remarkable Dublin Racing Festival and a Closutton domination expected at Cheltenham, Elliott has shown he will still firmly be in the picture with Grade 2 and Grade 3 successes amounting to €21,000 and €16,500 respectively at Navan.

Mullins though still has a daunting buffer of €600,000 and, despite securing no winners this week, he earned six winners two weeks ago including a €13,500 prize for Listed success with Elimay at Naas.

Henry de Bromhead continues to trail the leading pair in third, with Atlantic Fairy’s Listed victory at Navan earning him a cool €13,500.

Joseph O’Brien is nearing the million mark in fourth while Noel Meade rounds off the top five with just over €700,000 to his name.
