Galeron owner Gary Robinson embraces Shane Foley after his triumph in the Goffs Million

Shane Foley started the week without a ride in the Goffs Million but ended it on board the winner as Galeron banked English trainer Charlie Hills the lucrative prize pot at the Curragh, writes Paul Martin.

In the first renewal of Europe’s richest juvenile race since 2009, Galeron hit the front two furlongs out and held off the challenge of Hellsing – who had champion jockey Colin Keane on board – to land Hills the €611,000 prize pot.

The 16/1 shot continued Hills’ rich vein of form, with this his third win of a successful Saturday across the UK and Ireland, and Foley was delighted to have stepped up to the plate in style.

“It’s unbelievable, a great spare to pick up,” he told Racing TV. “All credit goes to my agent Ciaran [O’Toole].

“We were hunting earlier in the week when Jessica [Harrington] had nothing in it.

“He begged Charlie for the ride - a few other ones popped up last minute but in fairness, Charlie had committed to us so we stuck to it. He won well, enjoyed the ground and the trip.

“Charlie was very laid back and said ‘just ride your own race’. There was plenty of pace on and we were up the middle of the track, so it panned out for everyone and there were no hard-luck stories.

“I was able to get him going when I wanted and probably ended up getting there a little bit sooner than ideal, but on this ground when you get them going you have to keep them going.”

Keane may have narrowly missed out in the feature but he did not leave empty handed, guiding Michael O’Callaghan’s Crypto Force to victory in the Group 2 Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford Stakes.

Gordon Bennett edged out favourite Curraheen Princess to land the William Hill Joe McGrath Handicap while there was a shock in the Tipperary Crystal Apprentice Handicap as 80/1 shot French Rescue prevailed by just over a length.

On this ground, when you get them going you have to keep them going.
