Mala Beach chasing Down Royal repeat

Friday, Mar 15 2019

The Chase is the feature at Down Royal on Saturday where trainer Gordon Elliott bids to win the race for the third consecutive year and for the fourth year in five.

Elliott won previous renewals of the three-and-a-quarter-mile event with Roi Du Mee (2015) and Roi Des Francs (2017), and in Mala Beach bids to follow up last year’s success in what is a five-runner affair.

Mala Beach beat three rivals to win 12 months ago and faces two of his own stablemates in Jury Duty and Don Poli.

Globe-trotting Jury Duty makes his seasonal reappearance following his win in the Grand National Hurdle at Far Hills in America last October, while Don Poli, one of the most enigmatic horses in training, is a dual Cheltenham festival winner but whose form in recent years as been very disappointing.

Racing begins with the Racing TV Maiden Hurdle, where the Noel Meade trained Cosmo’s Moon might be able to improve one placing on a recent Thurdles runner-up effort.

Gold Cup-winning trainer Tom Taaffe could land the French Village Novice Handicap Hurdle with Goose Man, a winner over hurdles at Navan 57 days ago.
