The Board of Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) has approved capital development grant aid towards the proposed redevelopment of facilities at Down Royal racecourse. The HRI Racecourse Capital Development scheme will provide €182,697 towards the €727,571 cost of works proposed on two of the racecourse grandstands and the jockey changing facilities.

The projects proposed include the complete re-roofing of the main grandstand which covers both viewing terraces and hospitality areas. Further health and safety related works are required to the Governors stand where re-roofing and upgrades to viewing terraces are also planned. The final project relates to an upgrade in the jockeys changing facilities to maintain the industry standards expected of a modern racecourse.

Emma Meehan, CEO at Down Royal Racecourse, said: “We are delighted to have been approved for funding under the HRI Racecourse Capital Development scheme and very much look forward to commencing the works at Down Royal Racecourse.  We have exciting plans to improve Down Royal both on and off course over the coming years and are very grateful to HRI for supporting our vision.”

HRI Chief Executive, Brian Kavanagh, commented: “To date over €25 million has been provided in grant aid to 18 racecourses around the country, like Down Royal, supporting over 100 different projects aimed at improving customer and industry facilities. The approved projects will provide construction work and local employment, further emphasising the vital role of racecourses as contributors to their local economies.”
