Tipperary victory helps Mullins in pursuit of title rival Codd

Friday, Apr 21 2017

Patrick Mullins did his bid for the champion amateur title no harm with victory on Robin Des Foret in the Point To Point Evening 11th May Maiden Hurdle at Tipperary.

The 5-4 favourite was always on the front end and the race was between Willie Mullins' inmate and the Gordon Elliott-trained Leomar from a long way out.

It was soon clear that Robin Des Foret was travelling much the best, though, and although slightly awkward over the last, he still proved six and a half lengths too strong.

Patrick Mullins said: "That was easy! He loved the ground and particularly likes flat tracks. He has a huge stride and I think his jumping will come on from the experience.

"He has plenty of size and will jump fences next year. They'll have plenty of fun for the summer with him.

"That gets me within two winners of Jamie (Codd) - Jamie is riding out of his skin but is suspended tomorrow and I have two rides so I'll have to make hay now.

"I have eight or 10 rides against professionals until the end of the season but hopefully I'll give him a run for his money - it's going to be very hard."

Ask David turned into the straight with a commanding advantage in the Buy Online At TipperaryRaces.ie Handicap Hurdle and never really looked like being caught.

J J Slevin drove Tim Doyle's 20-1 chance out to a length-and-a-half defeat of Ted Bach, with Grey Mountain Mist third.

Lyreen Lad (4-1) improved to take second at Limerick last month and progressed again to go one better in the Follow TipperaryRaces On Twitter Maiden Hurdle for Tony Martin and Jack Kennedy.

Two runs back from a long time on the sidelines has brought Just Call Me (25-1) to the boil because Rachael Blackmore produced him to challenge at the last in the Follow Tipperary Races On Facebook Handicap Hurdle and he stretched clear of War Of The Pennys.
