Draconien measures up on Irish bow

Friday, Dec 8 2017

Draconien didn't have to come out of second gear to make a winning Irish debut in the Next Meeting Thursday January 11th (Q.R.) (C & G) Maiden Hurdle at Clonmel.

Fourth on his sole previous outing in a Grade One bumper in France, the Willie Mullins-trained 8-13 favourite was allowed an uncontested lead and jumped really well.

He had all of his rivals off the bridle from three out and Patrick Mullins barely moved a muscle, yet Draconien still cantered home by 12 lengths from Mighty Stowaway.

The champion trainer said: "He is a nice sort for the future and jumps very slick.

"He was very sharp over his hurdles, especially out of that ground when a lot of horses can't jump out of that ground and he didn't waste an inch in the air, which usually some of those French horses do.

"Christmas might be a bit soon but he'll go shortly after then."
